Eraeliya Villas & Gardens: A Hidden Oasis in the South of Sri Lanka
Last week, we were invited to Eraeliya Villas & Gardens by the curator, lovely Anna Egorkina for a fun, casual photoshoot. This trip turned out to be the perfect post-lockdown getaway for both me and Nathan. This tranquil accommodation in Weligama is one of the best places to stay in the south of Sri Lanka. In Sinhala, era eliya means sunshine, an apt name for a beachfront accommodation nestled in the swaying palm groves in Southern Sri Lanka.
Eraeliya sits in a large, spacious garden clad with coconut palms, tropical flowers, and patches of pink bougainvillea. It opens up to the turquoise blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Eraeliya has direct access to Jungle Beach in Weligama, which is a great place for a swim in the ocean throughout the year. There are eight different accommodation options, from their Ambalama Pavilion nestled in the big garden to a gorgeous beach chalet a few steps away from the beach and the large spacious Villa Walauua with a fully equipped kitchen.
We stayed in the Ramaya Suite in Villa Bawana. It was a carefully curated space with chic interiors and touches of splendor written all over it. We loved the large four-poster canopy bed, the marble bathtub, and the walk-in shower in the large, spacious bathroom. What makes Eraeliya unique is the small, thoughtful touches all around the property. Think of fully bloomed yellow orchid pants housed in terra-cotta pots dressing your room’s vintage-chic coffee table. Exquisite chandeliers hang from the raised ceilings. Original modern artwork and ancient Kandyan-era paintings fill the walls of each house.
Immersive guest experiences
While the property itself is gorgeous, Anna wants to focus on providing her guests with an experience. “There’s more to your holiday than just a beautiful hotel room,” Anna says. She says while her business was badly hit (like elsewhere in the world), the lockdown allowed her to take things slow and redesign her outlet of hospitality experiences.
One of the experiences Eraeliya provides is a romantic getaway for couples, featuring a relaxing couple’s massage at the in-house spa by a professional massage therapist, candlelight dinner, and a flower petal bath with candles. Eraeliya’s 3-night Fit And Feel Good package comes with a coaching session with their professional wellness coach, a full board meal plan to balance your nutrients, yoga, pilates, a fitness workout, a sculpting, and a firming massage. The last experience package is designed for friends and family, including a full board 2-night stay, BBQ, and an aqua aerobic session for the group.
The food served at the property
Nathan and I both loved the delicious meals served by the property’s in-house chef. Eraeliya prides on being a do-good establishment, giving attention to little details. There’s a healthy balance between continental cuisine and authentic Sri Lankan roots in their meals.
Our first morning breakfast was sautéed mushrooms served with sunny-side-up eggs, and sausages alongside a tropical fruit platter combining seasonal fruits, a glass of fresh fruit juice, and a cup of Sri Lankan milk tea. The next two days, the friendly, attentive staff served us avocado toast with poached eggs, and toast with homemade dried fruits and nuts jam.
You can opt for authentic Sri Lankan rice & curry for lunch. Some of my favorite dishes served for dinner includes a bowl of thick, creamy pumpkin soup and grilled tuna with a garden salad. We also had a delicious banana bread dressed in a drizzle of honey for dessert.
The In-house Aroma Spa
Eraeliya’s in-house spa is a beautiful relaxing space featuring a secluded spa pavilion. Aroma treatments by professional massage therapists are designed to relieve pain, headaches, stress, and muscle tension. Some of the treatments in the spa menu include Tranquility Aroma Massage and Revitalizing Body Scrub. The menu also features special treatments such as anti-cellulite massage seldom found in Sri Lanka.
Overall, we loved our stay here, and we hope to return soon. If you are looking for an immersive post-lockdown experience more than just a hotel, Eraeliya is a great place to spend a few days.
