Bed & Bicycle Hostel: A Quirky Modern Backpack Hostel in Mount Lavinia

Bed & Bicycle Hostel: A Quirky Modern Backpack Hostel in Mount Lavinia

Our experience and things to know about Bed & Bicycle Hostel

The twinkle lights downstairs add a little magical touch to the hostel premises. Having just had two beef samosas and chicken rolls from a roadside shop nearby, we are back in Bed & Bicycle Hostel — our home for the weekend. Tucked in a quiet corner in Mount Lavinia, a suburb, 13km south of Colombo, the hostel offers quality and comfort at affordable prices. The walls are decorated with beautiful artwork. A few houseplants in the reception area add a lively touch to the building. (Also read: Arthur’s Pizzeria and Pub)

Our dorm room is on the second floor. It’s a four-bed dormitory, spacious, spotlessly clean and has a sharing washroom. The washroom floors are kept clean and dry throughout the day. This small house-turned-hostel has a lovely communal area with a cozy couch on the second floor. In the kitchen, one can prepare small meals. They have a refrigerator, an oven, a kettle and cutlery for guests’ use. Guests can have tea and coffee, water refills throughout the day, for free (yay). Downstairs, there’s a big kitchen where guests can prepare their own meals. There’s a market next door to buy fresh fish and vegetables. Sri Lankan breakfast with tropical fruits is included in your room rates. We had Sri Lankan pol roti and vadai when we were there which was a good breakfast and kept us full until lunch.

The hostel, however, turns their AC off from 8 AM to 5 PM. They offer free bicycles and one can go explore the surrounding areas. It would be a bit uncomfortable if you want to sleep during the day, especially after a flight. They have ceiling fans but, Colombo being a hot, humid city, it gets a little sticky. The rooftop is lit up at night — the perfect place to relax on a sunbed with a drink.

If you are coming to Colombo and plan to stay for a few days, Bed & Bicycle Hostel is a great place to be. The rates remain cheaper compared to most other backpack hostels in Colombo and Mount Lavinia, and you get everything you need. The hostel only has dorm rooms, and one of the rooms can be accommodated as a female only dormitory.

What we loved the most: The wall art! It’s such a quirky space. They also have a big adorable doggo who easily becomes fond of the hostel guests.

We would like to thank Bed & Bicycle Hostel for organizing our stay with them, but as always opinions are honest and entirely our own.

  • Wow!I loved the graphic art on the walls of this very quirky . It would have been great if you have mentioned the prices of the stay too would have been helpful for the readers.

  • This looks like a really nice place to stay for a short no-frills getaway. I love the wall art. Really fantastic! The beds look really nice and comfy too. Even though I would prefer the privacy of my own room, I would have no issues staying there if I would need a place to stop and rest for the night.

  • Nice. I never thought that these kinds of cheaper hostels are available in Colombo. Happy to know. Srilanka is always my favorite destination, as I am from South India, the island country is very near to me & there are several similarities between us.

    Thanks for the writing,

    • Hey Manoj! Of course, there are so many cheap hostels now in Colombo. You can even find cheap but comfy hostels in many places in Sri Lanka. Yes to the similarities. Nathan lived 5 years in South India! We’d probably be visiting South India early next year! Zinara

  • I love how adorable this hostel is! It’s so earthy with a modern feel. I think hostels are such a great place to stay! 🙂
